SEO for Dispensaries

Local pack, organic rankings and the structured content AI engines extract from. Built once, working on both surfaces.

Dispensaries specifically

What is different about cannabis dispensaries and delivery services

The method below is the same whichever industry you are in. These are the parts that are not — and they are usually what decides whether the programme works.

One page per category, not one page listing everything

A single products page competes for nothing. "Edibles [city]" and "pre-rolls [city]" are separate queries with separate intent, and each needs a page that is genuinely about it. Most dispensary sites push every query at an embedded menu iframe, which search engines and AI crawlers largely cannot read.

Your embedded menu is probably invisible

Menus rendered inside a third-party iframe or loaded client-side contribute almost nothing to what a crawler sees. The dispensary believes it has hundreds of product pages; the index has one thin page. Getting real, crawlable category and product content onto your own domain is often the largest available gain.

"Open now" and "delivery" carry the intent

Cannabis search skews heavily to immediate need. Hours, delivery radius and live stock are ranking-relevant content, not operational detail, and they are the fields most likely to be stale across the four places an engine might read them.

Age gates can block crawlers

A 21+ interstitial implemented as a hard client-side redirect or a cookie wall can prevent crawlers and AI agents from ever seeing the page behind it. It is a legal requirement and it is frequently built in a way that also hides the entire site from the engines you need. Both things can be true, and it is fixable.

The method

How SEO works, in any category

01

Local first

The local pack is still the highest-intent surface in search. Location pages, Business Profile optimisation for every dispensary, and the entity consistency that lets engines resolve which dispensary is which. Practices routinely lose local visibility not because their content is weak but because their name, address and phone appear three slightly different ways across the directories engines actually read.

02

Written to be extracted

Pages lead with direct answers, use headings phrased the way people actually ask, and carry real specifics — device names, session counts, published pricing. Research on generative engines consistently finds that citations and statistics lift visibility while keyword stuffing actively reduces it. Content that reads well to a customer and extracts cleanly to a model is the same content.

03

Structured data as standard

Schema on every location and service page so engines can resolve the entity behind it. This is groundwork for both classic rankings and AI citation, which is why we never treat them as separate projects. It does not make an engine recommend you; it makes an engine able to tell which dispensary a page is about.

04

What we do not chase

Not keyword volume for its own sake, and not head terms a young domain cannot win. The order is winnable long-tail first, then commercial terms once there is authority to spend. Publishing thirty pages targeting terms you will not rank for inside two years is a common and expensive mistake.

Scope

Is this dispensary digital marketing?

Partly, and it is worth being exact about which part. A full dispensary digital marketing engagement usually bundles a website rebuild, email, social posting and brand design alongside search. We do not do those, and we would rather say so now than three weeks in.

What we do is the search half, on two surfaces instead of one: the local pack and organic rankings a dispensary needs in Google, and the listings, reviews and third-party presence that decide whether an assistant names you at all. The second surface is the one almost no dispensary digital marketing agency measures — and for a customer asking an engine for a recommendation, it is the only one that returns a name.

So if you need the full bundle, you need an agency of record and we are not it. If you need to be found — in Google and in the answers — that is the whole job here.

Category specifics

What this looks like for dispensaries

The method does not change between industries. The questions your customers actually ask, the sources the engines trust, and the rules you have to advertise inside all do.

Prompts we run for this category

  • best dispensary in Austin
  • edibles dispensary near me Scottsdale
  • dispensary open now Tampa
  • weed delivery Charlotte

Rules this category advertises inside

  • State cannabis advertising rules — they differ in every market
  • 21+ age-gating requirements on site and menu
  • No health or medical benefit claims
  • Weedmaps and Leafly platform content rules
  • No marketing across state lines

Citation layer

Where the engines look for a dispensary

Each engine resolves a local recommendation through a different set of sources. These are the ones that decide whether a dispensary gets named — and most of them are not your website.

  1. All engines Weedmaps
  2. All engines Leafly
  3. Gemini / AI Overviews Google Business Profile
  4. ChatGPT / Copilot Bing Places
  5. ChatGPT / Copilot Yelp
  6. ChatGPT Foursquare
  7. Perplexity Reddit — state and city cannabis subs
  8. All engines Local editorial roundups

Scope

What the engagement covers

Specifics rather than adjectives — and an equally specific list of what it does not cover, because unclear scope is the most common cause of a bad first quarter.

Included

  • Technical audit — indexation, canonicals, crawl access, Core Web Vitals
  • Location page build or rebuild across every dispensary
  • Business Profile optimisation per location
  • Schema for organisation, location, practitioner and service
  • Keyword map with difficulty filtering, not just volume
  • Content briefs and production against that map
  • Internal linking architecture
  • Monthly reporting to store visits, not sessions

Not included

  • Link buying or private blog networks
  • Content volume for its own sake — we would rather publish six good pages than thirty thin ones
  • Chasing head terms before the domain can hold them

What to expect, when

Timeline

  1. Weeks 1–2 Technical audit and keyword map
  2. Weeks 2–6 Location pages and structured data shipped
  3. Month 2+ Content production against the map, monthly
  4. Month 4–6 Commercial terms become realistic targets

4 questions

Common questions

Do you work on our existing site?

Usually, yes. Most engagements start with the site you have. A rebuild is occasionally the right call but it is rarely the fastest path to results, and it delays everything else by a quarter.

How does this interact with AI visibility?

They share infrastructure — schema, Business Profile, reviews, extractable content — and diverge in what they optimise for. Running them together is materially cheaper than buying them separately.

How long until we rank?

For a domain with existing authority, three to six months on long-tail terms. For a new domain, closer to six to twelve. Anyone quoting faster on competitive local terms is either lucky or not being straight with you.

Do you write the content?

Yes, against briefs you approve. Every page carries a named author and credentials, because expert attribution is one of the higher-lift signals for both search and AI citation.
